The bride and bridegroom arrived in a glittering procession. The marriage was solemnized by chanting of vedic mantras by the pundits, followed by a sumptuous feast for all. All the new couple could do, however, was croak at the gathering.
Two frogs have been joined in marriage as part of a special ritual aimed at invoking the rain god.
The townspeople flocked to witness the ceremony which saw the two amphibians being married at Baidyanatheswar temple amidst the chanting of vedic mantras. The event was part of an age-old practice designed to help make it rain during a period of drought.
"We arranged this marriage as the town is reeling under intensive heat without rains for several months now," said one of the organisers. "The sound of frog croaking is the sign of the onset of rain. So we performed the ritual with the chanting of hymns near a temple to invoke the rain god."
