A 'tooth tattoo' made from silk strands and gold wires could detect life-threatening illnesses.

The device is still in development but could one day become commonplace in monitoring patients for signs of bacteria and viruses through real-time updates. The 'tattoo' works by being stuck a tooth's enamel and detects problems via the patient's breath before transmitting the data to a nearby monitor.

At the moment the sensor is too large to fit on a human tooth and will require quite a bit of work to shrink down, researchers also hope to make it as resilient as possible so that it can withstand day-to-day activities such as eating and brushing.
