Scientists will know by the end of this year whether the so-called God Particle exists and the Large Hadron Collider will be switched off, according to Rolf Heuer, the director of CERN.
CERN director Rolf Heuer has said that scientists will soon know if the God Particle exists or not.
With a verdict expected before the end of the year, the hunt for the elusive particle may be coming to its end with plans to turn off the Large Hadron Collider once a conclusion is reached. "If the Large Hadron Collider continues to work I know we have enough collisions to produce enough signals to identify the Higgs Boson," said Heuer. "We will know by the end of this year whether it exists or whether it is non-existent."
Discovery of the particle could open up a whole new chapter in physics and help scientists to understand the conditions that existed at the beginning of the universe. "This would be a huge discovery that after 50 years we are able to describe the visible universe," Heuer added.
